Located in the North East of the DR Congo, bordering Uganda, is the IturiProvince. Sitting at over 1,800 m.a.s.l, with fertile red soil and the perfect micro climate for growing Speciality Coffee, the region is commonly referred to as the “forgotten” DRC Coffee region, behind its more famous Lake Kivu Region. Due to decades of ongoing Ethnic Clashes, investment in the coffee sector has been challenging to almost impossible, forcing many of the farmers to sell their coffee to neighboring Uganda
In 2017, the farm owners came with an idea of revitalizing the IturiCoffee story and putting it back on the world Speciality stage, where it belongs. they called this “Grains D’or”, translated as “beans of gold” for its coffee potential. they currently operate 2 collection/washing station sites in Djuguand Kpandroma, whereby just over 900 farmers deliver red cherries. the team then carefully select which cherries will go for Natural Processing and Washed Processing. Using basic motorized and converted
hand pulpers, coffees are processed in the late afternoon and evening, before being placed in fermentation buckets for a minimum 12 hours. All parchment coffees are dried over raised beds and in a green house if required, whilst the naturals are often dried over redbrick patios before left to settle in grain pro bags in the warehouse. Each season, they produce just over 350 bags of small batch natural and washed coffees for Export
